Michigan’s Mr. Basketball Watch: January

Inside Prep Sports/TJ Kelley

A month into Michigan’s 2016-’17 season and big time players are posting absurd numbers for many of the state’s top teams.  Many of these players are on the Mr. Basketball watch list.

6’5” 2017 guard Dylan Alderson (Clarkston, MI.) 20.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists for the state's top team.  Committed to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

6'9" 2017 power forward Jack Ballantyne (Macomb Dakota, MI.) The weight of Dakota's team has been on the big fella's shoulders as injuries have plagued the team through the first month of the season.  The unsigned senior is averaging over 16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals per game.

Central Michigan commit Matthew Beachler broke Lowell’s 45 year all-time leading scorer formerly held by Denny Dewittlast week and the Central Michigan commit is averaging 21 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals per game..

6’7” 2017 small forward Jamal Cain (Detroit Cornerstone, MI./The Family 17u) 23 points, 14 rebounds, 4 blocks, 4 assists, and 3 steals.  The Wolves are 6-2.  Cain committed to Marquette this past fall.

6’8” 2017 center/power forward Greg Eboigbodin (University of Detroit-Jesuit, MI.) 12.5 points, 14.3 rebounds, and 60% from the field.  Committed to Illinois-Chicago.

6’3” 2017 guard Greg Elliott (Detroit East English Village, MI.) 35 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 2.5 blocks per game.  A career high of 48 vs Detroit Pershing to start the first week of league play and a couple 30+ games has the undecided senior college recruitment take off as Marquette became his first high major offer.

5'8" 2017 point guard Malik Ellison (Flint Beecher, MI.) The unsigned 2-time State Champion is averaging 22 points, 5.2 assists, and 2 steals per game.

6’6” 2017 forward Keion Epps (Wayne Memorial, MI.) 18 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 3 assists are his averages in the Zebras' turn-around season.  He committed to Eastern Michigan in the summer of 2015.

6’10” 2017 center Jaron Faulds (Holt, MI.) He's averaging 16 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.9 blocks, and 2 assists per game.  Committed to Columbia.

6’1” 2017 combo guard Michael Flowers (Southfield A & T, MI.) He entered his lone game from the bench scoring 30 points over the break vs Novi Catholic Central.  Committed to Western Michigan.

6’3” 2017 guard Amauri Hardy (North Farmington, MI.) He's averaging 28 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists per game.  Committed to Oklahoma State.

6’10” 2017 power forward/center Eke Ikechukwo (University of Detroit-Jesuit, MI.) 10 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 63% from the perimeter.  Eke was the first of two Michigan players to commit to Marquette.

5'10" 2017 point guard Jermaine Jackson, jr. (Macomb Dakota, MI.) Side tracked since the early part of the season with a shoulder injury, J3 makes his return tonight vs Utica Eisenhower.  His shoulder may still be a little tender, but this is as close to 100% as Dakota has been this season.  He is uncommitted.  Jackson is averaging 26 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals through 6 games.

6’7” 2017 forward Isaiah Livers (Kalamazoo Central, MI.) 20 points and 17 rebounds per game for an udefeated K-Central team.  Committed to Michigan.

6’8” 2017 center/power forward Xavier Tillman (Grand Rapids Christian, MI.) 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists per game.  Tillman is committed to Michigan State.

6’5” 2017 small forward/wing Jason Whitens (Powers-North Central, MI.) 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists per game.  With four wins in as many games, Power-North Central will go for their 66th consecutive game breaking Chassell’s (65 consecutive games from 1956-1958) nearly 60-year-old consecutive win streak.  With two MHSAA State Titles under his belt, a quarterfinal loss Whitens’ freshman year is his only blemish on the court.
